  35. Stroustrup explores C++ concepts and facilities and presents 
  36. distinctive C++ design and programming styles that have evolved 
  37. to cope with the stringent demands of everyday "real world" systems 
  38. building.  First he explores C++'s support for concrete data 
  39. types and containers and gives examples of how the C++ generic 
  40. programming facilities, together with well-designed libraries, 
  41. can yield flexibility and economy of expression.  Next Stroustrup 
  42. examines one uses of class hierarchies, touching on issues 
  43. including encapsulation, interface design, efficiency, and 
  44. maintainability.  Finally, he reviews the background for 
  45. C++'s success.

  47. BIOGRAPHY
  48.  
  49. Bjarne Stroustrup is the designer and original implementor of C++ 
  50. and the author of The C++ Programming Language (1st edition, 1985.  
  51. 2nd edition, 1991) and The Design and Evolution of C++, which won 
  52. Dr. Dobbs Software Productivity Award in 1995.
  53.      His research interests include distributed systems, operating 
  54. systems, simulation, design and programming.  He is the head of 
  55. T&T Bell Labs' Large-scale Programming Reserarch Department and 
  56. an AT&T Bell Laboratories Fellow.  He is actively involved in the 
  57. ANSI/ISO standardization of C++.  He is the recipient of the 
  58. 1993 ACM Grace Murray Hopper award and an ACM Fellow.  He received 
  59. the Cand.Scient. degree from the University of Aarhus, Denmark, and 
  60. the Ph.D. in computer science from Cambridge University.
